Real-World Use: From Woodlands to Wetlands
As an all-female birding group, we spend a lot of time outdoors together. Our meet-ups usually involve a mix of fresh air, flasks of tea, plenty of fun, and (hopefully) some great birds. From blustery coastal walks to soggy reedbeds and peaceful woodland paths, our binoculars are always with us — and we’re pretty fussy about what makes a good pair.

So when Opticron loaned us the Natura WA ED 8×42 binoculars to try out at our regular meet-ups, we were genuinely excited. Even more importantly, we were curious to see how they’d cope when shared between lots of different people, with different eyesight, hand sizes, and birding experience. Spoiler alert: they went down very well.

First Impressions
The first thing most of us said when picking them up was some variation of “Oh, these feel good”. The Natura WA ED 8×42 feels solid and well made, but not heavy or clunky. At 743g, they’re light enough to wear around your neck all day without that slow ache creeping in.

They’re also nicely compact, which turned out to be a big win for our group. Several of us have smaller hands and often struggle with chunkier binoculars. These sat comfortably in the hand, felt well balanced, and were easy to grip one-handed if needed.
The rubber armour has a great textured feel. It’s grippy without being sticky, and it gave us confidence that the binoculars would survive being shoved into a rucksack — which, let’s be honest, definitely happened. They still looked and felt great after weeks of being passed around.
Comfort Matters
One thing we really value as a group is comfort. Our birding days aren’t rushed, and we often spend a long time just watching. The Natura WA ED 8×42 made that easy.
Easy to pick up, easy to use, and easy to enjoy.
The focus wheel is wide, nicely placed, and easy to reach. A few of us noticed it felt a bit stiff at first, but after some use it loosened up and became smooth and responsive. Once it settled in, it was great for quickly switching focus — for example, moving from a nearby robin to a distant buzzard circling overhead without any faffing.
The binoculars are also very easy to adjust. The twist-up eyecups have three positions, and members both with and without glasses found it straightforward to get comfortable. The dioptre adjustment has a good range too, which meant everyone could get a clear view
The View: Clear, Bright, and Easy on the Eyes
Now for the important bit — what do you actually see when you look through them?

The Natura WA ED 8×42 uses Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass, along with fully multi-coated optics, phase-corrected prisms, and Opticron’s Oasis prism coating. We won’t pretend we all talk about optics like that on our walks, but we do notice when the view is good — and this view really was.
The image was bright and sharp across a range of conditions. We used these binoculars on gloomy grey mornings, bright sunny days, and everything in between. Colours looked natural and true, which really helped when looking at subtle differences in plumage.
We were particularly pleased with how little chromatic aberration there was. Even when looking at birds against bright backgrounds — like gulls on the coast — we weren’t distracted by colour fringes. This made the viewing experience feel relaxed and easy on the eyes.
Wide Field of View: Brilliant for Finding Birds
The wide field of view turned out to be one of our favourite features.
If you’ve ever tried to find a bird someone is pointing at while peering through binoculars, you’ll know how frustrating a narrow view can be. The Natura WA ED 8×42 made this much easier. Birds were quicker to find and easier to follow.

This really came into its own on open sites. Scanning the horizon for raptors was enjoyable, and we found it especially helpful when watching birds in flight. Tracking a birds overhead, or watching them twisting and turning all felt natural and easy.
For members newer to birdwatching, this wide view was a confidence booster — fewer “I’ve lost it!” moments and more time actually watching the bird.
Close Focus: Not Just for Distant Birds
Another feature we all loved was the close focus of 1.9m.
At feeding stations and woodland edges, it was brilliant for getting really detailed views of birds up close. We enjoyed watching blue tits, great tits, coal tits, and the occasional nuthatch, picking out fine plumage details and behaviour.
It also made everyday encounters more special — a robin hopping along a path, a wren darting through brambles, or a dunnock quietly feeding nearby. Being able to focus so close added an extra layer of enjoyment to our walks.
British Weather Approved
Birding in the the U.K. means accepting that rain is often part of the deal. The Natura WA ED 8×42 is nitrogen filled and fully waterproof, and it definitely passed the British weather test.

On one particularly wet meet-up, we had heavy rain for most of the morning. The Natura WA ED 8×42 didn’t fog up, didn’t let any water in, and carried on performing perfectly. Knowing your optics can handle that kind of weather is a huge relief — no one wants to be worrying about their kit when they should be enjoying nature.
Price and Value: A Pleasant Surprise
When our members found out the price there were a few raised eyebrows— in a good way! Many expected these binoculars to cost significantly more based on how they performed.
The general feeling within the group was that the Natura WA ED 8×42 offers excellent value for money. They stack up well to more expensive binoculars from big-name brands, and for many birders, they’d be a genuine step up without breaking the bank.
Final Thoughts
After lots of sharing, testing, and chatting about them, the Opticron Natura WA ED 8×42 has become a bit of a group favourite.
They work well for different people, different eyesight needs, and different birding styles. Whether we were scanning mudflats for curlew, watching gulls offshore, or enjoying close-up garden birds, they delivered consistently excellent views.
“They’re comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and a joy to use”.
We’re glad that Opticron loaned us these binoculars to try at our meet-ups. They’ve sparked plenty of great conversations — and a few “Ooh, I need these” moments too!
From all of us at Birds & The Belles, the Natura WA ED 8×42 gets a big thumbs up. High quality, reliable, and excellent value.
