Right now, many of us are feeling the grip of winter — but for wildlife, the challenges can be life-threatening. With thick snow blanketing the ground, iced-up water sources, and frozen terrain, our feathered and furry neighbours are struggling to find food, water, and shelter.
Here’s how you can lend a hand:

1. Provide Fresh Water
Natural water sources are often frozen solid, making hydration a serious challenge. Place a shallow dish of water outside, and check it regularly to ensure it hasn’t frozen. Adding a small floating object like a ball can slow freezing.
2. Offer Food
- Birds: Set up feeders with high-energy foods like suet, seeds, or mealworms. Scatter seed on the ground for ground-feeding birds.
- Mammals: Leave out unsalted nuts, seeds, or chopped fruits for squirrels and other small mammals.
- Avoid feeding bread—it has little nutritional value for wildlife.
3. Create Shelter

- Build a small brush pile with branches and leaves to provide cover for birds, hedgehogs, and other creatures.
- Check your garden structures or woodpiles before using them—animals may be huddled inside.
4. Be Mindful of Wildlife
- If you’re driving, slow down and watch for animals crossing icy roads.
- Keep your pets indoors or on a leash to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Small actions can make a big difference. By providing essential resources, we can help wildlife get through these tough conditions until nature begins to thaw.
Let’s be their lifeline this winter!
