When Opticron loaned me the Manfrotto XPRO 4-Section monopod for review, I couldn’t wait to get out and put it through its paces! I soon found that the Manfrotto XPRO is a high-quality, well designed monopod that sits in the same league as professional ranges like the Manfrotto’s 190 collection.
Whether you’re new to photography or a seasoned professional, I think the Manfrotto XPRO monopod would be get a great addition to your kit and here is why…
First Impressions

Do you believe in love at first site? I do! From the moment I unboxed the Manfrotto XPRO monopod, I was struck by its appearance and build quality. Its sleek, stylish look, coupled with solid craftsmanship, immediately says that this monopod is built to last. The materials used —particularly for the handgrip and the power locks— feel premium and offer comfort during extended use and peace of mind that the monopod will last. In fact, Manfrotto are so confident that this monopod will stand the test of time that they offer a free 8 year extended warranty, making 10 years of cover in total!

One small detail that’s testament to Manfrotto’s thoughtful design is the retractable 3/8in thread adaptor that is housed within the 1/4in thread. Instead of needing to remove and rotate the entire thread, this all-in-one design simplifies and speeds up the setup process and prevents the frustration of dropping and loosing components (we’ve all been there!).
Compact, Lightweight, and Portable
Despite its solid build, the Manfrotto XPRO monopod is surprisingly lightweight at just 750g and has an impressive minimum height of just 56cm. This makes it really easy to carry around- whether it’s tucked under your arm or slung over your shoulder with a tripod strap (sold separately).

When the Manfrotto XPRO monopod is extended to its maximum height of 180cm, it provides enough reach to capture stunning shots over crowds or foliage. This was a great advantage for me when I was photographing some shy great crested grebes that were hidden behind the reeds.
Quick Power Locks

Extending and collapsing the monopod was a pleasure. Once I unlocked the quick power locks, the tubes glided out and back in with a satisfying smoothness that boosted my confidence in the monopod. The ergonomic design and generous size of the locks levers makes extension and retraction effortless. After years of frustration with poorer quality monopods, the Manfrotto quick power locks really impressed me. They have a very strong, reliable grip and provide ultra-fast setup, which is crucial for wildlife and sports photography with heavy lenses.
Impressive Weight Capacity and Versatility
The Manfrotto XPRO 4-Section monopod boasts an impressive maximum payload of 8kg. For context, a Canon 800mm prime lens weighs around 4.6kg, so 8kg is more than enough capacity for most professional or amateur setups. This high weight capacity means photographers can confidently attach larger lenses or accessories without any worry.
Solid Stability and Control

The construction of the monopod, with its quick power locks and D-shaped aluminium tubes, ensures excellent stability and prevents unwanted rotation. This is especially important when working with heavier gear, such as my Tamron 150 – 600mm lens. Even at full extension with more than a 2kg load, I didn’t feel any wobble or slippage. When paired with my K&F ball head (BH-36L), I experienced seamless control over movement and positioning, allowing me to concentrate on capturing the perfect shot rather than worrying about the safety of my gear.
Price and Overall Value
One of the most impressive things about the Manfrotto XPRO monopod is its affordability. Priced at just £89.99 RRP, it represents a fantastic value in the world of professional-grade photography. Given its durable construction, smooth operation, portable size, and impressive weight capabilities, it offers exceptional value that makes it suitable for amateurs stepping into more serious photography as well as pros seeking convenient, reliable gear.
A Brilliant All-Rounder

After testing the Manfrotto XPRO 4-Section monopod, I think that it’s a fantastic piece of kit that deserves a place in any photographer’s setup. Whether you’re shooting wildlife, landscapes, or sports, the Manfrotto XPRO monopod delivers professional results in a compact, user-friendly package. It’s a brilliant all-rounder, and at this price point, it’s really tough to beat.
The Manfrotto XPRO 4-Section monopods combination of sturdy build, lightweight portability, smooth operation, and affordability makes it a great choice. In fact, I’ll be buying one myself! Oh, and the compatible full Fluid Base and head.
